April Snow — Book 1 of Dead Signal

April 17, 2026.

The monitoring console logged the event at 7:23:07 PM, which was within the expected parameters for this kind of weather.

[EVENT DETECTED. ACQUISITION RADIUS: ACTIVE. INITIATING STANDARD PROTOCOL.]

The technician pulled up the map overlay. The event marker sat on the hill road, the one that ran above the northern edge of the site — right at the boundary of the active radius, close enough that the system had flagged it automatically. She'd seen this before. Weather events produced acquisition opportunities at the edges. The system knew what to do.

She confirmed the automatic response was running and went back to her coffee.

Through the glass partition, the server room was quiet. Indicator lights in sequence: green, green, green.

[PROTOCOL INITIATED. ACQUISITION WINDOW: OPEN.]

The system would handle it. It always handled it. In four years of overnight shifts she had watched the console work through twenty-three acquisition events without a deviation. The protocol ran. The signal arrived. The archive updated. The overnight report would note the event, the time, and the index number assigned to the new record.

She was thinking about whether the snow would still be there by morning when the acquisition window closed.

[SIGNAL NOT ACQUIRED.]

She looked up.

The console had not moved. The map overlay showed the event marker still on the hill road, still within radius. The protocol had run correctly. The timing was correct. She checked the receiver array: online. The site environmental systems: nominal. The archive interface: ready.

Nothing had arrived.

She ran the equipment check manually, the same one the system had already run, because that was the kind of thing you did at seven-twenty-three at night when a number didn't match.

Everything read normal.

She sat with it for a moment. Then she opened the incident log.

[ACQUISITION EVENT: 7:23:07. PROTOCOL: INITIATED. SIGNAL: NOT ACQUIRED. EQUIPMENT: NOMINAL. CAUSE: UNKNOWN. STATUS: FLAGGED FOR REVIEW.]

She had not filed an entry like this one.

She looked at the event marker on the hill road. Then at the server room: the silent racks, the green lights, the clean steady hum of everything running exactly as it should.

She filed the report.

Outside, above the site, it was still snowing.
